The Philippines
Right in the heart of Southeast Asia is the Philippines, a rambling chain of some 7,107 islands and islets. From the north to south, this tropical archipelago stretches for more than 1,700 kilometers towards the Equator. The South China Sea washes its western shores; a northern neighbor is Taiwan, as are Hong Kong and China; further north is Japan. Westward lies other Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. An arm of the archipelago points southwest towards the isle of Borneo; and at its feet, the island chain that is Indonesia. To the east and south, the waters of the Pacific Ocean sweep its headlands, looking outwards Micronesia and Polynesia.
The Liberation of Manila
When the smoke cleared in early March of 1945, the city of Manila was in ruins. Having undergone relentless shelling from American howitzers and the merciless firestorm set by remaining Japanese troops, Manila was a dim echo of the cosmopolitan city it once was.
The horrors of World War II, all coming to a head in the Battle of Manila, had taken their toll on the once-magnificent city that was the pride of the nation. The Japanese had fallen and Manila was now liberated. But at what cost?
Over six hundred city blocks laid low. Eleven thousand buildings damaged or destroyed. A hundred thousand civilian deaths in twenty nine days of terror.
As the city lay in a smoldering heap of debris and rubble, its people, battered and bruised, remained strong. In that time of adversity, true fortitude was displayed. Innocence was lost, but an entire generation of Filipinos developed a ferocious love for freedom, having paid for that ideal in blood.
In time, the city would rise from the ruins and grow back into its former glory, driven by pure Filipino tenacity, determination, and cooperation.
